What ruined the Colossus in Rhodes?

B 304 to year B.C. the Greeks living in Rhodes decided to erect a statue of solar god patron Helios, having devoted it to a victory over the enemy. The sculptor Hares with several assistants undertook this responsible work. On creation of this masterpiece bronze was left by twelve long years. As a result the enormous, literally, construction turned out: at an entrance to the harbor on the square the huge figure, nearly 36 meters in height, Helios, god of the Sun was erected. For complete idea of its kolossalnost an example: not the rare person could capture a finger on a statue hand. So there was an expression a colossus – a huge statue.
During an era of the ancient world the Colossus was well-known on all Mediterranean region. To look at this miracle there came merchants and just travelers from different corners of manned Oykumena.
But big does not mean "eternal, strong, durable". Later half a century the statue of the Colossus was destroyed by an earthquake. Tremors were so notable and strong that at a bronze statue knees broke. The colossus failed down to the ground and broke into numerous pieces.
Several centuries bronze pieces, being once the Colossus of Rhodes, lay on the earth. But one of local governors decided to sell these pieces, bronze was in the price. The sold pieces were melted – all that remained from a statue disappeared.
But on a seabed near the Rhodes harbor was found not so long ago the Colossus brush - it is the only thing that remained from this wonder of the world.
